Latvian men’s tennis team The daves of the second group of the Davis Cup could be held in March or September next year, the organizers of the competition report on Friday.
The agency LETA has already reported that the Latvian men’s tennis team will visit Turkey in September in the Davis Cup World Group 2 duel.
Turkey was sown with the ninth number, but Latvia was among the teams not drawn.
Shortly after the draw in mid-March, it was known that the Davis Cup would not be possible this year. On Friday, the tournament organizers officially confirmed that the Davis Cup final in Madrid next year will take place on November 22, and the World Group II duels are expected in March or September.
This year’s final was scheduled for November 23-29 in Madrid.
The organizers of the tournament “Space Tennis” and the International Tennis Federation (ITF) created a new Davis Cup calendar for three months, eventually agreeing on logistics, health and other issues related to the event.
The city of Madrid has also expressed support for postponing the tournament for a year.
Meanwhile, the world’s first and second group games with 48 national teams are scheduled for either March or September. Each duel team will play one game on its field and the other on the away.
Previously, the Davis Cup World Group 2 duels were scheduled for September 18-20. The 12 winners would compete in the elimination tournament for a place in the first group, but the losers in 2021 would have to fight for a place in the second group.
The games of the third and fourth groups of the World, the time of which is not yet known, have also been postponed to the next year. A total of 76 national units will start in both of these groups.
It has already been reported that the Latvian national team beat Egypt 4-1 in the Davis Cup World Group II play-off duel at the beginning of March. Meanwhile, the Turks in the first group “play-off” duel with 1-3 conceded to Israel.
Latvia and Turkey met in the third group European / African zone duel in 1993, where Latvians were 3-0. The victories were brought to Latvia by Armands Štrombahs and Ģirts Dzelde, who won both singles and doubles.
It is significant that Strombach’s son Roberts represented Latvia in a duel with Egypt last weekend.
Turkey’s first rocket is Jen Ilkel, who currently ranks 198th in the ATP rankings.
This year was special in that the country’s first racket Ernests Gulbis was in the ranks of the Latvian national team, as well as Artūrs Lazdiņš, Roberts Štrombahs, who grew up in Germany, and Kārlis Ozoliņš, the semi-finalist of this year’s Australian Open Junior Championship.
In September, the Latvian men’s tennis team played in the third group of the Davis Cup in Europe, which took place in the Greek capital Athens. The Latvian state managed to win the Northern Macedonia and Montenegro teams 3-0 convincingly, but later the superiority of the Estonian and Greek teams was recognized.
The Davis Cup is the main tennis competition for men’s teams, organized by the International Tennis Federation (ITF) since 1900. Originally, it was organized as a competition between the US and British national teams, but today it is the largest annual international team competition. The Latvian national team has been participating in this tournament since 1993.
