‘Men’s shoes’ increase the risk of injury in women’s football – VG

LESS FRICTION: Women are lighter than men, and therefore need less friction between the foot and the ground.

A new research report points out that soccer shoes are not fitted well enough for women and that this increases the risk of injury in women’s soccer.

Published:

– The fact that shoes are not suitable for girls is not an unknown phenomenon, but the consequences can be shocking.

This is what he tells VG Hege Jørgensen, managing director of Toppserien.

– We know that the frequency of injuries in Toppserien is higher than in Eliteserien, but that this could be the result is important research. Right now we have a total of 15 cruciate ligament injuries in the Toppserien, he adds.

KNOWN PROBLEM: Hege Jørgensen says it’s a known problem in women’s football that shoes and equipment don’t fit well enough.

The sole of football boots is adapted to different types of surfaces, but these are nowadays standardized according to a man’s qualifications and needs.

Women are lighter and don’t have such powerful kicks. Women therefore need less friction between the shoes and the surface.

So says one of the authors of the report, Dr. Katrine Okholm Kryger.

If you use shoes with too much friction, you could run the risk of them sticking to the ground longer than necessary. This mechanism can lead to cruciate ligament injuries and ankle sprains, he adds.

Research was released earlier this week by St. Marys University in England. Okholm Kryger also says the problem lies with the suppliers.

– Major equipment suppliers don’t do enough research and therefore don’t make enough equipment for women, says Dr. Okholm Kryger, who has a PhD in sports technology.

WANTS TO CHANGE: Dr. Okholm Kryger tells VG she hopes research in the field can help shed some light on the problem.

Not surprised

– Firstly, it’s very good that research is coming out, because we know there is minimal research on women’s sports in general, says Jørgensen.

Jørgensen says poorly fitting equipment is a known problem among top players. He now he hopes that the industry and the industry will take the matter seriously.

– This is a social issue and I hope now everyone does their part to make sport more equal. It’s sad that the equipment also has to work against one.

The online newspaper And NRK extension he also previously discussed how top Norwegian players are forced to use children’s shoes in smaller shoe sizes.
