Menpora Appointed Jokowi as Chair of INAFOC U21 World Cup 2021

Jakarta

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Zainudin Amali, became the Chairperson of the 2021 U-20 World Cup (INAFOC). He was appointed directly by Indonesian President Joko Widodo.

This was confirmed in the Limited Cabinet Meeting (Ratas) which was attended by the Ministry of Youth and Sports, several other ministries, President Jokowi, to the PSSI General Chairperson Mochamad Iriawan, Wednesday (1/7/2020). Zainudin Amali’s appointment related to the State Budget (APBN) funds which will be used by Indonesia in preparation for welcoming the U-20 World Cup.

This decision also annulled previous news where PSSI Deputy Chairperson, Iwan Budianto, had been appointed as INAFOC Chairperson. Zainudin Amali’s appointment as Chair of INAFOC at the same time emphasized the government’s role in organizing the U-20 World Cup.

“I convey the results of a limited internal meeting chaired directly by the President (Jokowi) who discussed the implementation of the 2021 U-20 World Cup. First is that all funding will be done through the State Budget, an organizing committee will be formed where government elements will be formed,” Zainudin Amali said in a statement the press.

“Namely forming INAFOC in the decision of the meeting, INAFOC was directly led by the Minister in charge, namely the Minister of Youth and Sports,” he added.

In addition, the meeting also decided that the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing (PUPR) immediately begin work on renovating the stadium venue. Previously the KemenPUPR could not work because there was no official decision from FIFA about the appointment of six venues.

About the six venues recently mentioned by PSSI, it is only a one-sided claim. However, the government finally decided that KemenPUPR immediately renovate the six stadiums that have been mentioned recently by PSSI.

The six stadiums referred to are the Bung Karno Main Stadium (SUGBK), the Sriwijaya Stadium, Manahan, the Starling Harupat (SJH), the Bung Tomo Stadium (GBT), and I Wayan Dipta. In a way, the government made a gambling action in the decision to renovate the six stadiums even though the decision in the form of an official appointment from FIFA had not yet come down.

On April 14, FIFA actually sent a letter to PSSI about the 2021 U-20 World Cup venue. In essence, FIFA gave the green light a list of six stadiums from the previous PSSI namely SUGBK, Pakansari, Mandala Krida, Manahan, GBT, and I Wayan Dipta.

The position of Pakansari and Mandala Krida is no longer in the latest PSSI list. The two stadiums are now replaced by Gelora Sriwijaya and SJH.

“Discussed also about the venue, it was decided because if we wait for the decision from FIFA it is still a long time, while the Ministry of PUPR needs time, both workmanship or administrative preparation,” said Zainudin Amali.

“The tender is at least two months, so it has already been decided that any changes will be immediately adjusted to FIFA’s decision,” he said.

“Indeed, as we know that on April 14 the PSSI letter had already delivered six stadiums to FIFA. There was a change in the two stadiums, so it was decided that the renovations were carried out earlier, provided PSSI had to communicate with FIFA continuously, so that it was a decision.”

“If later on what FIFA’s decision is, of course we have to start working, that is an important matter which was decided in an internal cabinet meeting this afternoon led by President Joko Widodo.”
