Medical Association on Corona Infections: “Are in a second, flat wave”

The Marburger Bund sees Germany at the beginning of a second corona wave. But the hospitals are prepared. The medical association warns against suppressing the pandemic and urges compliance with the rules.

According to the Marburg Federation, the second wave of corona has already affected Germany. The chairwoman of the medical association, Susanne Johna, speaks in the “Augsburger Allgemeine” of a “second, flat surge”. It is not comparable to the March and April figures. Nevertheless, the number of new infections increases.

“So there is a danger that we will lose the successes we have achieved in Germany so far with a combination of repression and a longing for normality,” warned Johna. She urged them to keep to the rules: “We all long for normality. But we are in a state that is not normal.” As long as there are no drugs to treat Covid-19, the spread of the virus must be curbed.

“Distance, hygiene, everyday mask”

“This can only be done using the AHA formula – distance, hygiene, everyday mask – and local quarantine,” said Johna. In view of the protest by thousands of people over the weekend, she defended the conditions. She compared the obligation to wear a mask to the introduction of a seat belt in the car, against which there was violent resistance at the time. Today, many people felt patronized by a mouthguard requirement. But the opposite is the case: just as the belt saves lives, “so does the mouthguard save lives”.

Marbuger Bund: Clinics are now prepared

According to the chairperson of the Marburger Bund, hospitals are now prepared for an increasing number of Covid 19 patients. In contrast to the first wave, hospital beds should not be kept blank this time, but should be kept free according to need, said Johna. The keeping of beds should be staggered according to the development of the pandemic. In practice, according to the Marburg Federation, a lower number of intensive care beds is kept free in stage one. If these are occupied, stage two comes into force 24 hours later and the capacities in the intensive care units are expanded.

“The process continues step by step until all of the intensive care capacities available for Covid 19 patients are exhausted at the highest alarm and expansion level,” said Johna. The warning from doctors comes at a time of increasing new infections in Germany.

879 new infections reported

After an average of 300 to 500 new infections were reported daily for several weeks, the number most recently was mostly between 800 and 1000. For the past 24 hours, the Robert Koch Institute has reported 879 new confirmed coronavirus infections. This brings the total number of cases in Germany to 211,281. According to the data, the number of deaths increased by eight to 9156.
