Runner Dies During Medellín‘s Rose Race, Officials Confirm
Medellín, Colombia - September 28, 2025 – A 48-year-old participant died today during the annual Rose Race in Medellín, officials have confirmed. Carlos Enrique Restrepo was participating in the 5K category when he experienced a medical emergency.
organizers stated that their medical team and ambulances responded promptly, and Restrepo was transported to the Medellín General Hospital. “Regrettably, despite all the efforts made, it was not possible to save his life,” the organization added.
Medellín Mayor Federico Gutiérrez expressed his regret over Restrepo’s death via his X account, offering condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. “I regret the death of Carlos Enrique Restrepo in the framework of the Rosas race today in Medellín,” Gutiérrez wrote. “He was 48 years old and was participating in the 5K category. He received medical attention on the site and was transferred to the General hospital of Medellín.Unfortunately lost his life. What a sad news. A hug of solidarity for his family and friends.”
The Rose Race, held through the main streets and avenues of Medellín, drew approximately 17,000 registered participants this year. The event aims to raise awareness about breast cancer prevention and highlight support resources available to those affected by the disease. This year’s race also incorporated messaging focused on environmental care and the reuse of recyclable materials.
