Meals delivered with gloves and study. Quarantine in a residence at the University of Minho – Observer

In addition to basic prevention recommendations, such as washing your hands frequently and taking care of the surfaces they touch, those in this residence can leave their rooms and contact other colleagues. But, if you want to leave the building during the quarantine, the situation is different: “As soon as we want to leave the residence, we cannot go back because we can contract the virus outside and, on returning, we would infect those who are here . I think it’s more of a security measure ”, comments Carina.

It is around 9:30 am that, normally, the doorman of the residence, protected with gloves, comes to deliver breakfast to the rooms. It does the same with the rest of the meals – lunch, snack and dinner – and the food is always packed and placed in a bag. “They always do this, with the greatest care possible,” adds the student. Tuesday’s lunch, for example, arrived at 12:30. Dinner arrives around 6:30 pm. On Sunday and Monday, there were those who dined together.

Hygiene care “is also taken into account”. Whenever any type of material is needed, “It is a matter of asking and they deliver everything that is not in the residence”. The guarantee had already been given by the university itself in the dispatch of 10 March: “These students will be guaranteed the necessary conditions (namely food, health care, hygiene, etc.) to comply with the prophylactic quarantine period”.

For Carina Araújo, and for most students who are quarantined in their homes, the fact that they are in the same space and with the same people for 14 days can be the biggest challenge of this isolation. For now, the days have been spent “watching movies, exercising, playing cards and having dinner together” – but also studying in the rooms. “Because everything is very beautiful, but the tests continue”, remember.

The same has been done by Fátima Vieira, a student on the same course who is also in voluntary prophylactic isolation. Fátima was at the residence – the same as Carina’s – when the University of Minho issued the order. He was preparing to go to work in part time that arranged, but never got out. “I called my boss, explained the situation and he understood,” he adds to the Observer.

At first, he admits, he got “a little panicked” when he learned that he would have to stay 14 days inside the residence. “That day, we were practically always together with the porter to find out all the information. We were in the social room, we had dinner, we played cards and Monopoly and then everyone went to their room ”, he recalls. This Monday “was already a normal day: waking up, studying, going to other people and watching movies”.

The 23-year-old student, who came from the Azores to Braga, called the SNS24 line to find out what she would have to do if she had any symptoms, but she was also contacted by the university and the place where she works. “The doctor from there called me to ask how I was feeling and said that if I needed anything, if I had any symptoms, to call her and also to the university”, she recalls. The sister, who is a nurse, has also given her prevention advice.
