Team owner Lawrence Stroll was furious when his team was penalized for copying Mercedes brake ducts. Racing Point was fined four hundred thousand euros and lost fifteen points in the constructors’ championship. Stroll, however, was especially angry about the false accusations, the Canadian said in a statement, and therefore wanted to appeal. But in the end, the team decided to drop the objection.
McLaren boss Zak Brown did not see that decision coming. “I was surprised they dropped the profession because they wanted to clear their name. That makes this a pretty big change. It’s inconsistent when you compare it to its intentions,” Brown is quoted as saying by Motorsport.com. The American is happy with the FIA’s promise to put in place rules that prevent copying from becoming the norm in the sport. “That was very important and I am happy to see that the FIA has taken this quickly and that they are taking this seriously.”
“You have to know what the rules are. And whatever they are, you always have to accept them. The problem everyone had, I think they thought ‘wait a minute, what happened here is against the rules and the spirit of into sport? ‘ So there are loopholes and we have to close them before this happens again. I think the FIA was not happy with what they saw. They are on top of it and that’s a good thing. “
