The decision is against the sore leg of seven residents. They fear, among other things, light nuisance from the large, yellow M, which must lure passers-by to the restaurant. They also fear extra nuisance from litter, young people and more traffic.

Here comes the fast food giant’s restaurant:

Supporters and opponents

Two weeks ago the city council was still struggling with the arrival of the McDonald’s along the A7 between Kolham and Hoogezand. Coalition parties PvdA, CDA and VVD were before the arrival, but the SP and ChristenUnie were still in doubt.

Especially the attitude of McDonald’s about the advertisements bothered coalition party SP. The multinational refuses to abandon the large, yellow M that residents have difficulty with. “We think that this is not a way of talking to each other,” said Han van der Vlist.

Hot hanging iron

The advertising column also turned out to be a hot topic on Thursday evening. The ChristenUnie wants it to be recorded in black and white that the luminous M should not exceed 25 square meters. Two weeks ago, McDonald’s promised that it is possible, but that commitment is not yet included in the plans.

The ChristenUnie therefore took ten minutes to see if it could be taken. After some discussions with other parties, the party decides to make some changes to the proposal by submitting an amendment. A majority is in favor of that adjustment; enough for the ChristenUnie to bring the restaurant to central Groningen.

“Answer is no”

For the other coalition party – the SP – it turned out not to be sufficient: they voted against. “We asked ourselves:” Do we want a McDonald’s in Central Groningen? ” The answer is no, ‘says Han van der Vlist. Opposition party GroenLinks is also against the arrival of the restaurant.

The adopted plan is now available for inspection for six weeks. Interested parties can lodge an appeal against the decision with the Council of State.
