McDavid awarded at NHL Awards – winner of Lindsay, Hart

Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid became the big winner of the gala when the 2021 edition of the NHL Awards was launched the night before Wednesday, Swedish time. The 24-year-old from Richmond Hill, Ontario in Canada won both the Hart Trophy, the award for the league’s most valuable player, and the Ted Lindsay Award; the league’s most outstanding player.

McDavid finished in first place on all 100 ballots in the Hart Trophy poll – something only Wayne Gretzky (1981-82) managed through the NHL.

Oilers McDavid won the NHL’s scoring total of 105 points (33 + 72), 21 ahead of teammate Leon Draisitl which finished in second place. McDavid led the NHL in assists, points with as many players on the ice (68) and powerplay points (37), and finished in second place in terms of goals and match-winning goals (11). McDavid won the points league for the third time (100 points in 2016-17 and 108 points in 2017-18).

The Oilers went 4-0 in games against the Winnipeg Jets in the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

“My teammates mean everything,” said McDavid. I would not be anything without them. We had a special group this season and even though we did not succeed in what we hoped for, it was great to be part of the gang. I hope we can make the city of Edmonton and the fans dream again. This would not have been possible without my teammates. I am fortunate to be part of this group.

About the Ted Lindsay Award, voted for by the players, McDavid said:

– It means a lot that even equals pay attention to one. These are the guys you meet every night, the guys you fight. It’s an incredible feeling that it comes from them.

Tampa Bay Lightnings back Victor Hedman – currently in the middle of the Stanley Cup finals against the Montreal Canadiens – had hoped to add another Norris Trophy to his prize cabinet, but was sniffed by young Adam Fox from the New York Rangers.

The 23-year-old finished in second place in the hillside scoring with his 47 points (5 + 42), one point behind the Edmonton Oilers Tyson Barrie. Fox was +19 over 55 games and led the Rangers in terms of ice time per game at 24:42, three minutes more than Jacob Trouba which averaged the second most at 21:29.

“There are far too many people to thank from the time I grew up, youth coaches, skating coaches, everyone who helped me reach this point,” Fox said. Of course also Rangers organization that gave me the opportunity here and my teammates. The award may be individual, but without the guys here it would not have been possible.

The award for Rookie of the Year, Calder Trophy, went to the Minnesota Wilds breakthrough man Kirill Kaprizov. The 24-year-old forward is the first Wild player to win the award.

Kaprizov was the top rookie in goals (27), points (51), powerplay goals (8) and shots on goal (157) in 55 games. He was second best in terms of points with the same number of players on the ice (38) and powerplay points (13), and third best in plus / minus at +10. The forward led Wild in terms of goals, points, points per game (0.93) and overtime goals (2), and scored three match-winning goals.

“I have enjoyed everything this season,” said Kaprizov. I enjoyed the atmosphere in the locker room, I enjoyed playing with my teammates, I enjoyed the playoff atmosphere and the rinks we played in. The organization has been incredible. Everything this season has really fallen into place and it has been special.

– A big thank you to the team. Without them, this would never have been possible.

Vegas Golden Knights Marc-Andre Fleury took home the Vezina Trophy as the league’s top goalkeeper. The award is the experienced 36-year-old’s first in his career. Fleury went 26-10-0 and finished third in the league in terms of wins and zeros (6), as well as third in terms of goals conceded per match (1.98) and save percentage (92.8) among goalkeepers with at least 20 matches played.

“Having a good team in front of you helps, of course,” Fleury said. The entire coaching staff, our medical staff… they have got me ready for games every night. I love this sport, I have a great passion for this and I still have fun. I’m lucky to do what I do.

– My teammates have been incredible. I have played with consistently good defense in front of me and my partner Robin Lehner has been a great support throughout the season.
