French Police Commander Cleared in Mbappé Donation Case
A divisional commander responsible for the security of the French national football team has been acquitted by a disciplinary council following an examination into a €60,300 donation from star player Kylian Mbappé in June 2023.The officer, who has served since 2004, was accused of failing to report the gift and additional payments of €30,000 made by Mbappé to four other security personnel. He resumed his duties immediately after the hearing.
The investigation, conducted by the General Inspectorate of the National Police (IGPN) and reported by le Monde and The New Obs, centered on whether the commander compromised his “duty of integrity” by accepting the funds. While administration officials sought early retirement for the commander, unions representing half of the council unanimously opposed the measure.
The case now rests with the General Directorate of National Police (DGPN) for a final decision in the coming months. Despite recent personnel changes within the team’s security detail, the commander remains stationed at Clairefontaine and is expected to oversee security arrangements for the French team’s next gathering in November. The incident highlights the complex intersection of high-profile athletes, security personnel, and ethical guidelines within French football.
