Mayor Van Zanen interrupts vacation; Scheveningen unrest ‘unacceptable’

Mayor Van Zanen of The Hague has responded to the fatal stabbing incident at the Scheveningen Pier last night. A 19-year-old man from Rotterdam was killed. “That is incredibly sad and we deeply sympathize with the next of kin,” says the mayor. Due to the situation, Van Zanen has interrupted his holiday in Egmond aan Zee.

“Due to current events, I find it uncomfortable to be visible in the city but not approachable. That is why I have decided, in consultation with our aldermen, to resume my duties today”, says the mayor.

Shortly after the fight, two suspects were arrested. The police are still investigating the circumstances, but no announcements have been made about this yet. The police does, however, call on witnesses once again to report, in particular people who took pictures of it.

The man was stabbed at around 6:30 PM. At the time, there were many people on the Pier. The police are calling on people not to distribute captured images via social media.

Unrest in coastal areas

It has been restless in Scheveningen lately. “What we have seen on our coast in recent days, especially on Scheveningen, are behaviors that are unacceptable”, says Van Zanen. He cites as examples violence and threats against traffic controllers and enforcers and transgressive behavior on beaches and in traffic.

“As a municipality, we are terribly shocked by the lack of respect for our public service providers. The lack of norms and values that the residents of our coastal neighborhoods have been confronted with by visitors in recent days is also worrying,” says Van Zanen.

The mayor states that the municipality of The Hague has deployed the maximum capacity to ensure that the situation on the coast runs smoothly.

“Looked like a war zone”

According to Broadcaster West it involved hundreds of beachgoers who witnessed the stabbing on Monday. “It looked like a war zone,” says an employee of a nearby fish shop. Many people fled to his case after the incident. According to witnesses, the perpetrator would have used a knife of 20 to 30 centimeters.

The perpetrator and other people of the group then ran into the Palace Promenade shopping center. “What have you done now, I heard the perpetrator’s girlfriend scream,” said a witness in the mall. In front of the entrance to Palace Promenade, a gun and a knife were dumped in a trash can.
