Maya Le Tissier: England Debut Chance for Manchester United Star

Manchester United Defender Maya⁣ Le Tissier‘s Stellar Form Fuels England Starting XI Debate

Leah Williamson and Lucy‌ bronze’s recent injuries could open the door for‍ Manchester united captain ‍Maya Le Tissier to earn a more prominent role ‌with the England national team,a prospect her club coach‍ marc Skinner emphatically supports. The 23-year-old defender, who converted a first-half penalty in United’s Champions League debut victory over‌ Valerenga, has consistently anchored one of the Women’s Super League’s ‌strongest backlines.

Despite limited international exposure -⁤ just eight caps since her first call-up in November 2022 – Le Tissier’s consistent performance for United is drawing attention. Skinner preemptively addressed the question⁢ of⁣ whether she ⁢should start for England, stating, “Your next question is probably ‘should she start for England’… I am⁣ not here to answer that.” He then passionately defended the player, adding, “I start her for a reason. She is an amazing footballer and a driven ‌personality. When she gets her ‍prospect, she will‍ be an incredible ⁣england stalwart and⁢ someone ⁤who will give the country pride.”

Le‍ Tissier has made a record 71 consecutive‍ appearances in the WSL, including ⁢a 1-1 draw against Chelsea‌ last week. Last season,⁢ United boasted the second-best⁤ defense in the WSL, ⁢conceding only 16 goals in 22 games, largely thanks to Le Tissier’s leadership. She currently leads ⁢the WSL this ⁣season in both ⁢clearances (34) ⁢and touches (444).

While England manager‍ Sarina Wiegman has previously indicated a preference for Le Tissier at right-back, her natural position is center-back ‌- a position currently weakened by Williamson’s ‌injury. Le Tissier was included in Wiegman’s Euro 2025 squad but did not⁣ feature in Switzerland as the Lionesses retained thier title. Wiegman is expected to name her squad for upcoming matches ⁣against Brazil and Australia next week, presenting a crucial opportunity for Le Tissier to ⁣solidify her‍ place in the national team setup. Skinner concluded, “She is [at the top of her game] and has been for a long time,” and reiterated, “She is a fantastic‍ player. I won’t answer ⁤the other question.”
