Dune, by Denis Villeneuve
The synopsis made in MaXoE : A radiant sun. Then a face with unearthly blue eyes. And a woman’s voice. This voice tells the story of Arrakis, an arid planet coveted for its unique resource, as rare as it is precious: Spices. It also recounts its invasion by House Harkonnen, while the tragic fate of this planet – renamed Dune by its inhabitants, the Fremen – scrolls by like a mirage. And finally, she pronounces a first name: Paul. Paul wakes up with the memory of a dream, that of plains of sand as far as the eye can see. And wars. But was it just a dream?
Criticism made in MaXoE (in full here) : By going completely against the codes of the current blockbuster – as was already the case for the sequel he signed Blade Runner – Denis Villeneuve manages to blur the boundary between blockbuster film and auteur film, to combine form and content, thus recalling certain large frescoes produced in the 1960s such as Lawrence d’Arabie. A filiation that we also find thanks to the original soundtrack signed Hans Zimmer. His music – by saturating the image, by adding to the oppressive feeling of certain scenes and by dressing this desert planet with its incandescent and inhospitable dunes to the point of suffocation – is sometimes reminiscent of that of the film by David Lean. Whether it is the magnetic presence of Timothée Chalamet (and her hair that haunted the nights of Denis Villeneuve), the filmmaker’s ambitious and unique staging, the choice of grandiose settings or the intelligence of the treatment of the various characters and elements of the plot imagined by Herbertit is difficult to find fault with this master stroke of Denis Villeneuve which deserves all the superlatives.
