Bit by bit, a 35-kilometer route is being built on which cyclists can travel quickly from Darmstadt to Frankfurt – undisturbed by cars and pedestrians.

WIf the turnaround in traffic is to succeed, the traffic routes have to change. Cycling longer distances has also become much more attractive and muscle-friendly since the introduction of e-bikes. The fact that bicycles are still used with caution in urban areas is due to the general traffic situation. There are no bike lanes on most streets. Where they exist, they are often ruthlessly parked up. The nationwide model project for a cyclists’ motorway from Darmstadt to Frankfurt proves that things can be done differently.

It wasn’t politicians who invented the project and who are now being celebrated for it, as on Monday morning in the Wixhausen district of Darmstadt, where a further 560 meters of the cycle highway were inaugurated. Since the construction work had already started weeks ago, but the politicians from Berlin, Wiesbaden and Darmstadt did not want to forego the high-profile groundbreaking ceremony, a heap of sand was dumped on the sidewalk at the Wixhausen train station and eight spades were put in, so that a photo could be published in the newspapers comes. “I’m laughing my ass off,” exclaimed a cyclist who drove past the crowd.
