Maximum cash payment: the Netherlands wants a limit against money laundering | Inland

The Netherlands is not alone, outgoing minister Hoekstra (Finance) is making the proposal together with Belgium, France, Italy and Spain. Together they ask the European Commission for a maximum of 5000 euros for paying with cash, with room for countries to go even lower. Hoekstra himself is working on a limit of 3000 euros, he writes to the House of Representatives.

The countries also want to get rid of the 500 euro note, which is mainly used by criminals. The note is no longer printed, but 400 million copies are still in circulation. Hoekstra and his colleagues want to gradually take the note out of circulation.
