Long Covid Impacts Over 25% of Post-Infection Population
A recent study, conducted in New York City, indicates that over a quarter of individuals experiencing symptoms following a Covid-19 infection meet the criteria for long Covid. The study, which surveyed residents across the five boroughs – Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island – found that more than 80% of those affected report limitations in their daily routines. A ample 25% of Long Covid sufferers experience symptoms that directly impede their ability to work, leading to income loss and financial strain. Furthermore, approximately one-third of New york residents reported experiencing symptoms for over one month after their initial Covid-19 infection.
Long Covid is characterized by a diverse range of persistent symptoms, including chronic cough, shortness of breath, cognitive dysfunction often described as “brain fog,” dizziness, elevated heart rate, sleep disturbances, anxiety, depression, fatigue, gastrointestinal issues, and loss of taste or smell. Emerging research, including studies at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City led by Dr. David Putrino, demonstrates that Long Covid can also cause vascular damage and the presence of microclots in the bloodstream, potentially contributing to cardiovascular complications.
“Nobody should have to choose between salary and life and security,” McGorry stated, emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness and systemic support for long Covid patients. He specifically highlighted the financial burden faced by many, forcing arduous choices between maintaining income and prioritizing their health.
