The prestigious Champions League draw brought the strong clubs Barcelona and Juventus of Turin, represented by titled strikers Lionel Messi and Christian Ronaldo respectively, in one group on Thursday, according to the Union of European Football Federations (UEFA).
“Barcelona” and “Juventus” got into Group G, where they also drew from Kiev “Dinamo” and the champions League debut Hungarian club “Ferencvaros”.
In the draw in Geneva, 32 teams were divided into four baskets. The first basket included the current trophy holders Munich Bayern, the European League winners Sevilla, as well as the champions of the top six countries. In the other baskets, the teams finished in the UEFA club rankings. Several clubs of the same national federation could not be grouped together in the group. Four teams were drawn in each of the eight groups.
The first games in the groups are scheduled for October 20 and 21. The groups will play two rounds, with the teams meeting with each opponent at home and away. The two strongest teams in each group will advance to the first round of elimination. The final of the tournament is scheduled for May 29 in Istanbul.
Latvian championship team “Riga” FC season ended in the Champions League in the first qualifying round, where lost in Tel Aviv “Maccabi”.
