Marvel’s Avengers Review – Ramp in San Francisco

Marvel’s Avengers

Marvel’s Avengers does a lot of good, but the fine level is slipping in too many areas. The campaign is fun, has the typical Avengers atmosphere, has well-written dialogues and strong acting and a very nice story. That offers you about ten hours of very entertaining playing time. The problem is that the game continues for a long time after that and the missions you can play then are not half as strong. They are generic, interchangeable missions with the same objectives in the same environments. In addition, there are some small issues that could have been easily resolved, but are now causing irritation. The same goes for the technical problems that the game is experiencing. Too bad, because the gameplay is wonderfully action-packed and very varied, because fighting with each of the six heroes feels very different. That makes learning all the moves quite difficult, but it is mainly a plus, especially if you continue to play the game well after the campaign. If Crystal Dynamics comes with new original content for higher power levels, a lot will change in the final bill. For now, however, Marvel’s Avengers lacks quality to be highly recommended.

Final verdict

From the first few times we’ve seen Marvel’s Avengers, little has stuck as well as the discussion about the appearance of the heroes in the game. When the world was first able to get a clear look at the game from Crystal Dynamics at E3 2019, ‘Phase 3’ of the Marvel Cinematic Universe had just been completed, with Avengers: Endgame as the dazzling finale. Now the later released movie Spider-Man: Far From Home also belongs to phase 3, but that does not matter. More importantly, Square Enix showed a game starring the beloved heroes, but those heroes were nothing like their likeness from the movies. Not everyone could digest that equally well. This is understandable in some way. You are used to how a certain character ‘should’ be and a deviation from that is difficult. That is an effect that readers of comics will experience less, because in comics superheroes often change their appearance and they are at least different from the actors you know as Captain America, Black Widow and Thor. Regardless, Crystal Dynamics took the criticism seriously and adapted the Avengers. While the characters in the game still don’t really look like the movie actors – which probably shouldn’t – it’s clear that the heroes have definitely taken a step in that direction with their looks, to make things a bit more recognizable than anything. was more than a year ago.

Because so much attention was paid to the appearance of the Avengers, relatively little was said about what kind of game Marvel’s Avengers would become. The E3 demo, which is also in the game as the intro to the story, showed that it is an action-packed game and that the game is playable in co-op. However, the latter appears to be a lot more important and more present than expected. Yes, the game can be played completely on your own, but each mission starts in a screen where you can use matchmaking if you wish. More importantly, after completing the campaign, you actually only played a fraction of the game. After this you can develop your heroes even further in level and in power level, by playing series of extra missions. These are of course becoming increasingly difficult, making it more desirable – and simply more fun – to play them with others. You don’t have to, but it’s not hard to see that co-op gameplay should be an important part of the game.

However, you just start the game solo, playing as a little girl who listens to the name Kamala Khan. Together with her father she is visiting a special Avengers festival called A-Day, in San Francisco, where she has been invited as an award winner because she has written a beautiful ‘fan fiction’ story. While walking around the festival site, Kamala comes across all the different Avengers. Thor poses for pictures, Captain America talks to her about the story she invented, and so on. Immediately the game displays some strong conversations, which later occur much more often, but the scene also has a function. He shows the pinnacle of hero worship towards the celebrated Avengers, which will soon be a thing of the past. A-Day goes completely wrong. San Francisco is under attack. While Thor, Iron Man, Hulk and Black Widow deal with hordes of enemies on the Golden Gate Bridge, the real attack appears to be elsewhere. On board the Helicarrier, Captain Marvel is surprised and attacked. What exactly happens remains unclear for a while, but eventually the Helicarrier crashes into the bay, accompanied by an explosion that unleashes a strange, blue good. The damage is obvious. San Francisco has been largely destroyed and there are many victims.
