Marvel’s Avengers will be offering several heroes from the Marvel universe starting in September, including Miss Marvel, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, Thor, Hawkeye, but also Spider-Man, exclusive to the PlayStation. If the announcement obviously delighted PlayStation players, users of other platforms have not failed to display their dissatisfaction. The director of Crystal Dynamics, Scot Amos, then spoke about their choice in the columns of IGN Japan.
“Despite all of Spider-Man’s great solo adventures, having him alongside Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, and Miss Marvel is going to bring a whole new dimension.“said Vince Napoli, Lead Combat Designer earlier. The hero will arrive in game in 2021 on the occasion of a special event which will offer a series of challenges to accomplish. Scot Amos indicates that it will be the “single character“to have the right to this treatment, before explaining the reasons for this exclusivity.
The inclusion of Spider-Man is a unique opportunity for us because of the relationship PlayStation and Marvel have.
Insomniac Games, acquired last year by Sony, has already published the Adventures of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man, exclusive to the PS4. The studio is currently working on the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man : Miles Morales for the PS5. Sony Pictures Entertainment also owns the film adaptation rights for the hero.
No announcements for cross-play are currently planned., says Amos, who speaks one last time about the disappointment of the many players who will not have the opportunity to play as Spider-Man.
I would say Marvel’s Avengers has a lot of heroes, and with the scope and scale of this game and this universe, gamers will be busy with a lot of stuff. And as we just announced with Hawkeye, there are more heroes to come. (…)

Shaun Escayg, Creative Director, has finally indicated that it will be a version of Spider-Man “inspired by our world“and therefore slightly different from that of Insomniac.
The beta of Marvel’s Avengers will begin August 7 on PS4, and on August 14 on Xbox One and PC for players who have pre-ordered the game. An open beta will take place starting August 21. The title will officially release on September 4 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, and then later on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
