Martin Sheen told why he changed his name to Ramon Estévez

Martin Sheen, whose birth name is Ramon Estévez, admitted that he made the change for career reasons. “It’s one of the things I regret,” he said, explaining that choosing a stage name was desirable to enter show business. His agent believed that the pseudonym would help him get more roles.

But he never officially gave up his birth name. “I have it on my marriage certificate, my passport, my driver’s license. Sometimes you get persuaded when you don’t have the foresight or even the courage to stand up for what you believe in and pay for it later. But of course I only speak for myself,” he confided.

A native of Ohio, USA, he is the father of Emilio Estévez (60) and Charlieho Sheena (56) who decided to follow in their father’s footsteps and pursue acting. Martin Sheen claims that he did not stand in the way of his sons in show business. He didn’t even know that his descendants had acting ambitions.

“To be honest, I wasn’t aware of that. I was so self-absorbed trying to be the breadwinner that I wasn’t aware of their penchant for acting,” he revealed. “Once I was playing in a show and Emilio appeared. I thought he came to visit me, but he got a part in the same show.’

Martin Sheen he added that the only influence he had on his elder son was to keep the name. When Emilio was starting out, even his agent advised him to change it to Sheen. “And I thank God he didn’t,” Martin Sheen added.

The actor and his wife Janet have a total of four children, in addition to Emilio and Charlie, son Ramon (58) and daughter Renée (55). They are all into acting. Except for the youngest of Charlie Sheen’s sons, whose birth name is Carlos Irwin Estévez, they all kept their Spanish surnames.
