Dallas Cowboys Security Chief Alerted Police to Lineman’s Distress Before Death
FRISCO, TX – Dallas Cowboys security director Cable Johnson contacted authorities on Wednesday, November 5, expressing concern for the well-being of defensive lineman marshawn Kneeland, hours before Kneeland was found dead. According to facts shared with ESPN, Johnson reported receiving troubling text messages from Kneeland that suggested a mental health crisis and appeared to be a farewell.
“He sent text messages in our group that were concerning – probably mental health-wise - but the message seemed to say goodbye. There were comments about not being able to go to jail,” Johnson told authorities, as reported by ESPN.
Kneeland, 24, died last week from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police pursuit. The Frisco police Department responded to a call at 10:39 p.m. on November 5 regarding a vehicle that had fled an initial traffic stop. Kneeland was involved in a car accident and subsequently fled on foot.
Johnson’s call to police came approximately an hour into the pursuit, at 11:40 p.m., after receiving messages from Kneeland within the preceding 20 minutes. Officers discovered Kneeland’s body in the early morning hours. The events leading up to the pursuit remain under investigation.
