Mark Zuckerberg Warning: Hard Times Are Coming

Jakarta

The deteriorating economic situation has affected technology companies, including the parent Facebook, Meta. CEO Meta, Mark Zuckerberg, said the company would hire fewer engineers this year than originally planned. In addition, employees will also be whipped for their performance.

“If I have to bet, I can say that right now is probably one of the worst (economic) downturns we’ve seen,” Zuckerberg told Meta employees, as quoted detikINET from CNN, Thursday (5/7/2022).

In 2022, Meta will initially recruit 10,000 new engineers. However, it is certain that this figure will drop to around 6,000, perhaps because the company is trying to be more efficient and reduce employee costs.

In addition to reducing job vacancies, the company also did not fill some positions left by employees. Zuckerberg also assessed that there were several employees who did not perform even though they did not express the threat of holding layoffs.

“Realistically, there are probably some people at this company who shouldn’t be here,” Zuckerberg said.

For that, Meta will be more active in evaluating employees. “My hope with raising expectations and aiming more aggressively, is because I think some of you might decide this place isn’t for you,” he added. Mark Zuckerberg.

The second half of 2022 is indeed predicted to be very challenging for technology companies due to deteriorating macroeconomic conditions, such as a drastic increase in inflation. Even the United States is likely to experience an economic recession.

Meta itself continues to fall in its valuation, even by half this year. Meta reports daily active users on Facebook declined for the first time. Challenges also come from tough competitors like TikTok.
