Marius Gilbert on the coronavirus: “If individual responsibility does not work, there will be stricter measures”

The epidemiologist warns: faced with the rise in infections, the government could take additional measures quickly.

Lhe Crisis Center was reassuring on Monday about the evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic in Belgium, but reiterated its call for caution in the face of the increase in cases of contamination. “The situation is not dramatic, but now is the time to react to overcome the resurgence of infections that appeared two weeks ago,” said the infectious disease specialist and interfederal spokesperson for Covid-19, Yves Van Laethem, during the press point on the epidemiological evolution.

For the moment, the government has not yet taken new measures to counter this new increase in contamination. Marius Gilbert, guest on the RTBF set, warns that if they continue to increase, that could quickly change.

“The device calls for the responsibility of each other”. But, he says, if people don’t take responsibility now, “more regulatory measures” can be adopted. This could be, for example, the closing of cafes or restaurants earlier, or “a maximum number of contact persons”.

“It could go very quickly,” adds the expert. “With good communication and through better contact follow-up, we manage to reverse the trend”, but if this is not the case “we give ourselves a few days, even a week but we are not going wait until the end of August to react ”.

“It’s a shame,” he says, “that the norm has completely shifted in social circles, we kiss again, etc. as if there was nothing left. We must bring the standard back to something much safer in terms of transmission ”.
