Virologist Marc Van Ranst argues, following the example of the Netherlands, for the establishment of a “Flemish ventilation fund”. This should ensure that there is healthy air in all schools.

In the Netherlands, the cabinet has earmarked 360 million euros for adaptation work in schools to ensure that all classes and classrooms are well ventilated, an important weapon in the fight against the corona virus.
–
At the beginning of October, the ventilation was not in order in at least 777 primary and secondary schools in the Netherlands, the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported. Sometimes this can be solved by airing the room between lessons, but in other cases the ventilation system has to be adjusted or replaced. And that costs money.

“First step”
However, the 360 million that the cabinet is making available to put the ventilation in order within three years must be supplemented by the municipalities and the schools themselves. They have to pay 70 percent of the costs. Questions are, however, raised. The umbrella organization of secondary schools fears that schools have no money for this. And the umbrella organization of primary schools thinks that more money is needed, but is “happy with this first step”.

Virologist Marc Van Ranst is fond of the Dutch idea. He says so on social media. “If we consider good ventilation of our classrooms important, infrastructure adjustments will be necessary in some schools. A Flemish ventilation fund is indispensable for this,” it sounds. “Healthy Flemish air for healthy Flemish students. The Netherlands is doing it.”
