MAP – Coronavirus worldwide: which countries are most affected?

Almost the entire world has been hit for several months by the Covid-19 pandemic. The number of contaminations with the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus is Tuesday, May 19, at 4,911,902 confirmed cases, in 188 countries and territories, according to a balance sheet established by researchers from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. A total of 323,579 people died, while 1,701,024 others recovered.

The original focus of the pandemic, China – not counting the territories of Hong Kong and Macao – has 84,063 cases. For weeks, the figures have hardly changed, prompting some to question the veracity of the figures given by the Chinese authorities. The country has been greatly exceeded for several weeks by the United States (1,528,661 cases), Russia becoming the second most affected country in the world from this point of view (308,705 cases). This is followed by Brazil, the third most affected country with 271,885, the United Kingdom (250,138 cases), Spain (232,037 cases) and Italy (226,699 cases). Finally come France (180,933 cases), Germany (177,827 cases), Turkey (151,615 cases) and Iran (124,603 cases).

A magnitude that must be nuanced by country mortality. Thus, Belgium is only in 16th place among the most affected countries but has the highest mortality in the world among the large states.
