Many wasps and maggots due to high temperatures, also more nuisance

Climate change has not only increased the number of wasps, but also other species. Like the French dominula, “the one with those long legs”, and hornets, “the very big ones”. The pest controller advises to let hornets sit comfortably when they are not a nuisance. “They eat a lot of other pests, such as flies and mosquitoes.”

Besides wasps, the high temperatures also teem with flies, mosquitoes and maggots. Hengeveld: “I recently stood above a green container with an explosion of maggots and flies. That is really no fun.”

According to Hengeveld, this has not only to do with the warm weather, but also with the current waste collection system. Because green containers are collected once every two weeks in many municipalities. In warm weather that is not enough, according to the pest controller.

Bastiaan Meerburg, director of the Animal Pests Knowledge and Advice Center, also recognizes this problem. It would be wise if they visit more often at high temperatures, “says Meerburg in the NOS Radio 1 News.

In some municipalities residents receive a bonus if they put their waste out on the street less often, which also encourages vermin. In villages and cities where waste is collected in (underground) containers, there is also a nuisance. The bins full of waste attract vermin. “Wet your chest for a plague of mice and rats, because there is a lot more waste this year now that the Dutch are not on vacation because of corona,” says Hengeveld.

At high temperatures, a pest infestation in a container can develop within a day. Meerburg: “The eggs of flies can hatch within ten hours in this warm weather. Then you quickly have maggots in the wheelie bin.”

But whether those crawling animals are a real problem in addition to a nuisance? Hengeveld thinks so. “If a wasp gets in your throat, you have to go to the hospital anyway. Not everyone is allergic to a wasp sting, but it can be dangerous. In addition to nuisance, Meerburg also sees a problem in maggots and flies.” It is just not hygienic : the flies can carry pathogens. “
