The phenomenon occurs only four times a year and has been a major tourist attraction since the early 2000s.
What is “Manhattanhenge”?
The term “Manhattenhenge” was coined by the American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson. It describes how the sun shines in a straight line through the canyons of Manhattan. This is rare because the city’s streets, or blocks, aren’t perfectly aligned east-west. The phenomenon occurs around December 5th and January 8th in winter, and always around May 28th and July 13th in summer.
