This event is called the “Manhattanhenge”, in reference to Stonehenge, the famous monument in the south of England whose flagstones are traversed by the sun before and after the winter and summer solstices.
“It’s a magnificent event and it’s a totally New York moment. It’s not the sun that sets, it’s the Earth that turns and goes from light to dark”Jeannette Wolfson told 20 Minutesa science teacher who came to take pictures to show them to her students the next day.

At 8:12 p.m. precisely, the sun appeared in the form of a large ball of fire in the axis of the buildings. In the crowd, you could see many people with phones and cameras in their hands, trying to immortalize this unique moment. Photographers came with their telephoto lens to take magnificent shots, like Patrick Batchelder.
“The photo itself isn’t that important, it’s being in the middle of the crowd and enjoying seeing something unique in New York”he told West France.
This event occurs four times a year for two days, approximately three to four weeks before and after the winter and summer solstices. Next time Manhattanhenge will be on July 12.
