New year, old habit: Liverpool win 2-0 at home in the first game in 2020 against the amazing newcomer Sheffield United.
The sovereign leader of the Premier League came for the eleventh win in a row and maintained the lead of 13 points over pursuer Leicester City even after the 21st round. Mohamed Salah after four minutes and Sadio Mané after the break after a remarkable one-two with Salah scored the goals for Liverpool.
The team of coach Jürgen Klopp remained without conceding for the fifth game in a row; the defense against goalkeeper Alisson and the Dutch defense chief Virgil van Dijk has been undefeated for 495 minutes. Xherdan Shaqiri was missing from Liverpool due to a thigh injury.
Promoter Sheffield United lost some momentum after a strong late autumn with only one defeat in twelve games over the festive season and scored only one point in the last three games. The small (result) crisis is easy to justify: Sheffield had to face defending champions Manchester City and leader Liverpool in the last two rounds.
