Mandelabrug to Zoetermeer is partially dismantled, A12 is to be temporarily closed | inland

The dangerous Nelson Mandela bridge, which crosses the A12 near Zoetermeer, will be partially removed. This was decided by the mayor and the councilors of Zoetermeer on Tuesday evening.

The common ditch the bridge in early December because there was a possible risk of collapse. The reason for this were two investigations into cracks in the construction.

A support structure is installed under part of the bridge. The roof and deck of the bridge hanging over the A12 will be dismantled. The road has to be temporarily closed for this.

When exactly that will happen and how long it will take is not yet clear. We’ll know more on Wednesday. Completion is expected by January 15th.

The Nelson Mandela Bridge is an important connection to the city and the only way to reach, among other things, the Zoetermeer station. In addition to the A12, a railway line and the RandstadRail also pass under the bridge.

To restore the connection, a replacement section of the bridge will be built on the A12. “The formation of cracks in the bridge is continuously monitored and the alarm continues to exist, so that Rijkswaterstaat and all other parts can be warned in time if necessary if changes occur,” reports the municipality.

The Nelson Mandela Bridge was commissioned in the early 1990s. It was built for the Floriade horticultural exhibition, which was held in Zoetermeer in 1992, among other things.
