Mandatory vaccination for healthcare workers: protecting yourself to protect patients

In a health care system, codes of ethics recognize as a general principle that those who care or provide care must protect themselves and also protect patients. In a pandemic situation, vaccination ensures both.

The Collège des médecins du Québec, whose primary mission is to protect the public, has clearly come out in favor of compulsory vaccination for all health personnel in order to protect patients and the network.

Outside the health system, the same principle applies to the Good Samaritan who has the obligation to help a person in distress without, however, putting himself at risk and above all avoiding making the situation worse (First, do no harm – first, do no harm).

Freedom

With a highly effective vaccine, offered free of charge, and an equally effective vaccination program, unless there is an exceptional medical condition, everyone should be vaccinated. Those who refuse to be vaccinated on the pretext that their freedom is being violated must realize, in support of their associations, their unions and their employers, that the best way to protect their freedom is vaccination since it will allow everyone the world to stop restrictive measures and safely.

  • Listen to Richard Martineau’s interview with Léon Dontigny, retired doctor, on QUB radio:

Solidarity

Accepting the vaccine is a gesture of social solidarity that not only controls the spread of the virus and protects the quality of life and life of infected people, but also avoids overloading the health system which puts patients unaffected by COVID at risk. -19.

In the final analysis, we should act like Good Samaritans and together regain true freedom, the freedom of the vaccinated.
