Mandatory DGT Sticker Cities: A List

Monday, April 3, 2023, 00:01

The Easter special operation is already underway. The DGT began its surveillance campaign last Friday and it is expected that more than 16 million movements will be exceeded in the coming days. The greatest influx of traffic will take place from Wednesday, prior to Holy Thursday, until Easter Monday, a holiday in the Basque Country, the Balearic Islands, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, La Rioja and Navarra.

On these dates, drivers must, in addition to paying special attention to the road where last year there were 25 fatal accidents with 27 victims, take into account the restrictions imposed since the beginning of the year in many towns in Spain. Because spending a few days on vacation can be very expensive.

Since the beginning of the year, towns with more than 50,000 inhabitants are required to implement a Low Emission Zone (ZBE). Vehicles without the right to an environmental label may not access these areas, that is, vehicles registered before January 1, 2001 if they are gasoline; and prior to 2006 if they are diesel. They are considered the most polluting vehicles. Although most cities are still pending the application of this environmental law, many already fine vehicles that do not meet the conditions.

One of those requirements is to carry the DGT label. As reported by Tráfico on its website, “if you do not wear it visible, you will not be able to benefit from the advantages that the different badges entail.” Among them, unrestricted access to LEZs. Entering without a sticker, even with an ecological car, implies a risk and the fine amounts to 200 euros. It is not the only sanction existing in the regulations. There are cities, not all of them because it is regulated by municipal ordinance, which also fine owners who do not carry a DGT environmental label on their vehicles. It is the case of Madrid or Gijonwhere the ordinance has been cautiously suspended.

But as the DGT regulations establish, to benefit from the environmental label it is necessary to wear it. so these are the cities where the sticker should be mandatory this Holy Week -it must be taken into account that many of them have not yet applied the ZBE-:
