Manchester United Winger Mason Greenwood Freed From Rape Conviction

Greenwood was acquitted of attempted rape, assault and coercive conduct charges.

Mason Greenwood has been acquitted of all charges in the case relating to the allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive and intimidating behavior.

Greenwood was initially arrested in January 2022 and has been suspended by the club due to all of the above allegations, with a body of evidence submitted by the victim and leaked to the media.

He was later arrested again for violating the terms of his bail and was charged by prosecutors. Now, he has been cleared of all wrongdoing, with it being revealed back in November that his court date had been set for February 2023.

A statement from Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, Head of Public Protection for Greater Manchester Police, read: “Criminal proceedings against a 21 year old male [Greenwood] in connection with the investigation that was opened in January 2022, today (Thursday 2 February 2023), it has been terminated by the BPK.

“Given the significant media coverage of this case, it is only natural that we share the news that the 21-year-old man, who has been arrested and charged in connection with an investigation that opened in January 2022, is no longer facing criminal proceedings in relation to this.

“The investigative team remains in regular contact with the legal team, providing record updates, and understands the reasons for stopping proceedings at this stage, and that this decision was not taken lightly.

“Despite the media and public interest in this case, we have decided not to comment on it in more detail.

“However, I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate GMP’s commitment to investigating allegations of violence against women and girls and supporting those affected, regardless of their circumstances, during this difficult and upsetting time for them.

“More and more officers are receiving specialist training and troops are increasingly consistently using the tools, made available through the criminal justice system, to keep people safe and care for victims.

“If you feel you have been or may be a victim, please don’t let this case stop you from asking for help.”
