Managers in Russian service: Lure of dubious money

Paris, Dusseldorf, Hamburg, Berlin The German with the most supervisory board mandates in Russia is not ex-Chancellor Gerhard Schröder: This dubious honor is shared by Nord Stream 2 boss Matthias Warnig, who has been under sanctions again since Tuesday, and former Axel Springer manager Regina von Flemming.

It was not until January, when the Russian military deployment around Ukraine was in full swing, that von Flemming took over a seat on the supervisory board of the Raspadskaya hard coal company. It is her fourth overall in Russia. Raspadskaya operates some of the largest coal mines and is part of the Evraz steel group, whose billionaire owners have repeatedly been caught in international money laundering scandals.

From 2005 to 2016, von Flemming was head of the publishing house Axel Springer Russia, which at times published Russian editions of “Forbes” and “Newsweek” for magazines critical of the Kremlin. Previously, she had set up Russian subsidiaries for medium-sized companies such as Krone and Ehrmann.
