Man struck and killed on 110 Freeway near downtown LA – NBC Los Angeles

Fatal Freeway Collision Shuts Down 110 South

Pedestrian Fatality Investigated Near Exposition Boulevard

A deadly incident on the 110 Freeway claimed a life early Tuesday morning when a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) responded to the critical situation just before 5 a.m.

Investigation Underway

CHP officers were dispatched to the freeway’s southbound lanes near Exposition Boulevard following reports of an individual attempting to cross the busy thoroughfare. The pedestrian was hit by at least one vehicle and tragically pronounced deceased at the scene.

Authorities are currently working to piece together the events leading up to the tragedy. Debris was scattered across multiple lanes, indicating the force of the impact. Investigators are interviewing drivers who may have witnessed or been involved in the collision.

The identity of the man and the specific circumstances that led him to be on the freeway remain unknown at this time.

Traffic Disruption and Resolution

The collision caused significant disruptions to morning commutes, with all northbound lanes of the 110 Freeway initially closed. The Sigalert, which indicated the severe traffic backup, was eventually canceled around 7:30 a.m. as lanes reopened.

Pedestrian fatalities on U.S. highways remain a serious concern, with data from the Federal Highway Administration indicating that thousands of such incidents occur annually. For instance, in 2022, over 7,500 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes nationwide (FHWA).

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of this fatal event.
