Man seriously injured in attack near synagogue in Hamburg

Near a synagogue in Hamburg, a man assaulted a 26-year-old. The victim was seriously injured, the police reported. The attack takes place almost exactly a year after the anti-Semitic act of terrorism on a synagogue in Halle, Germany.

Near the Synagogue on the Hohe Weide in the Eimsbüttel district of Hamburg, a 26-year-old man was badly injured by a blow to the head with a kick. The victim was recognizable as Jewish by his kippah, reports the Southgerman newspaper. Despite the serious injuries, his doctors say he will survive the attack.

The perpetrator, a 29-year-old man, is said to have been dressed in camouflage clothing and was quickly overpowered by the police. He made no other victims. The synagogue, which with more than 3,000 members is already one of the largest in Germany, can in any case count on a police guard and its own security service. This allowed quick action. According to the DPA news agency, he had a note with a swastika in his pocket.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas calls the Germans through Twitter to oppose anti-Semitism. “This is not an isolated act,” he writes.

The attack brings back memories of the anti-Semitic attack that took place in the German city of Halle almost exactly a year ago. Then a terrorist tried to break into a synagogue at a gathering for the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur. He shot two people dead, several others were injured.
