After Baden-Württemberg, a patient has also been shown to have the novel corona virus for the first time in North Rhine-Westphalia. The infection was diagnosed in a man from the Heinsberg district, as reported by the NRW Ministry of Health and the district late Tuesday evening. The patient was admitted to a hospital in Erkelenz on Monday afternoon with symptoms of severe pneumonia. “The patient is in critical condition and is currently being isolated in the intensive care unit.” According to dpa information, he is in his mid-40s and has a previous illness.
The patient’s wife is also treated with symptoms of a viral illness. Her condition is currently stable. The diagnosis of whether she was also infected with the virus is still pending. According to the district administrator Stephan Pusch, the sick man had had contact with an acquaintance who had been in China recently on business. The “Aachener Zeitung” reported. At first, Pusch could not say whether this man had also received treatment.
A first coronavirus patient had only been confirmed in Baden-Württemberg shortly before. It was a 25-year-old man from the Göppingen district, said the Ministry of Health in Stuttgart on Tuesday evening. He probably got infected during a trip to Italy in Milan.
After suffering from flu-like symptoms after his return, he contacted the local health department. A subsequent test was positive, the state government said. The 25-year-old is said to still be hospitalized and isolated there. In addition, all contact persons of the man should be checked and asked about their state of health.
Previously 16 confirmed cases in Germany
Health Minister Manne Lucha wants to announce further information tomorrow. “Baden-Württemberg prepared for this case at an early stage. All the positions involved work closely and intensively together,” said the Green Party politician.
In Germany there were previously 16 confirmed coronavirus infections, most of the patients have now been discharged from the hospital. 14 of the cases occurred in Bavaria, one of those affected is still in the clinic. The other two cases were returnees from China who had been flown out of the People’s Republic by plane by the federal government. They were treated at the university clinic in Frankfurt am Main and released in mid-February.
