Man Arrested After Shooting at Sacramento ABC Affiliate
SACRAMENTO, CA – A man has been arrested in connection with a drive-by shooting at the ABC10 television station in Sacramento, California, police announced Saturday. Anibal Hernandezsantana, 64, was taken into custody early Saturday and charged with felonies including shooting into an occupied building, assault with a deadly weapon, and negligent discharge of a firearm, according to a statement from the Sacramento Police Department.
Police responded to reports of gunfire in the 400 block of Broadway, where ABC10 is located, around 1:30 p.m.local time on Friday. At least three bullets struck a window in the station’s lobby. The building was occupied at the time, but no injuries were reported.The suspect vehicle fled the scene.
Hernandezsantana was booked into the Sacramento County Main Jail and afterward released after posting $200,000 bail, according to Sacramento county Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Amar Gandhi. He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday, September 23, at 3 p.m. local time. It is currently unknown if he has retained legal counsel.
The shooting occurred a day after protests took place outside the station related to the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s show by ABC. Authorities have stated the motive for the shooting is under inquiry and any connection to the protests remains unclear.
TEGNA, the parent company of ABC10, stated it is indeed cooperating with police and has increased security at the station.”Our priority is to ensure our employees’ safety and well-being as they continue to carry out our mission to serve our community with critical local news and facts,” a company spokesperson said.
The National Association of Black Journalists Sacramento chapter condemned the shooting,calling it “heartbreaking and unacceptable” and stating that violence against the media is “violence against our entire community.”
