Man (81) survived six days in car stuck in California storm | Abroad

An 81-year-old man was rescued from his car after six days in the US state of California. The man got stuck in the snow after a big storm covered the ground with about three feet of snow.

It had been almost a week since the man left California to drive back to his wife in Nevada. But when he still hadn’t arrived, his wife and grandson became concerned. They feared that the man would become hypothermic, writes the BBC.

The man, a retired NASA employee, survived in the car on some cookies, croissants and snow. He kept himself warm with some towels left in the car and occasionally turned on the battery.

Two days before the man was rescued, the car’s battery died. Bad weather delayed rescue workers’ work. As a result, the risk of hypothermia increased. But after six days, a helicopter found the car. The man has been taken to hospital.

California has long been plagued by winter weather. As a result of the cold and the storm, at least thirteen people have died.
