Man (54) eats a bag of licorice every day for weeks and dies | Abroad

“Even a small amount of licorice can cause your blood pressure to rise a little,” said Dr. Neel Butala, who wrote about the man in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The culprit is glycyrrizine, a sweetener that is in the candy. It causes, among other things, a low potassium level, cardiac arrhythmias and high blood pressure.

The construction worker suddenly collapsed in a fast food restaurant where he was having lunch. Its potassium content turned out to be extremely low. A few weeks before his death, the man had switched from red fruit candies to licorice.

Besides eating too much licorice, the man had other bad habits. He smoked one pack of cigarettes a day for 36 years, used heroin in the past and did not undergo treatment for hepatitis C infection.

A spokesman for The Hersey Company, a well-known confectionery company in America, told The Guardian that their products are safe, “but that they should be enjoyed in moderation.”
