Man (51) suspected of lighting fire in parking garage in Alkmaar | NOW

The large fire on Wednesday morning in the underground parking garage Singelgarage in the center of Alkmaar was probably ignited. The police arrested a 51-year-old suspect that same day. He is still detained, a spokesman said Thursday.

The Alkmaarder was arrested in the morning near the parking garage that was still burning at the time, because he was “suspicious” according to the police. He was then taken to the office for questioning.

The police are still looking for witnesses, especially for the person who left the parking garage by car at around 6.15 am.

The fire brigade received notification about the fire at around 6.25 a.m. At the end of the morning, the fire was under control. There were no injuries in the fire.

About 160 cars were damaged. Several vehicles are believed to have been destroyed. The police and fire brigade have started an investigation and the garage will certainly remain closed in the coming days, the municipality of Alkmaar reports.

Once the condition of the garage has been mapped, damage experts will look at the cars. Owners of the vehicles are advised to contact their insurer.
