The 26-year-old man, whose nationality is unknown, was arrested Monday morning and taken to hospital for further medical examination. “People take extreme risks when they try to hide in small, enclosed spaces such as the landing gear of an airplane. These facts will be investigated,” said the US authorities, according to Belga.
From a certain height, the temperature drops drastically, exposing migrants in the landing gear to possible hypothermia, oxygen deficiency or a fall from the plane, the US aviation authority FAA underlines.
Since 1947, at least 129 migrants have been found in the landing gear of commercial flights. One hundred of them died from injuries sustained from the extreme conditions.
