The Pittsburgh Penguins celebrate an unchallenged 4-1 away win over the Anaheim Ducks in the NHL.
The focus is on the returnee Evgeni Malkin. The Russian superstar makes his season debut for the Pens in mid-January after undergoing surgery on his right knee in June last year.
The four-time All-Star made an impressive comeback with a brace and an assist against the Ducks. The 35-year-old veteran made the goals 2-0 (24th) and 3-1 (35th), the other Pittsburgh goals were scored by Jeff Carter (2nd, 58th). Anaheim can meanwhile shorten through Jakob Silfverberg (29th).
Overall, Malkin is delivering a “multi-goal game” for the 63rd time in his career, the first time since March 10, 2020. Of the active NHL professionals, only Alexander Ovechkin (154), Sidney Crosby (85), Steven Stamkos (80 ) and Carter, with his 65th brace, often celebrated at least two goals in a match.
“I’m just glad we got the first game,” said Malkin after the Penguins’ 11th win in their last 12 games.
The Nashville Predators celebrate their fifth straight win with a 5-4 overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche. Matt Duchene redeemed the home side after 3:01 minutes of overtime.
The Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Vegas Golden Knights 4-3 in the shootout. Tampa Bay Lightning dispatches the Buffalo Sabers 6-1. Nikita Kutcherov scored a hat-trick, Steven Stamkos had a goal and two assists.
The Florida Panthers beat the Vancouver Canucks 5-2. Sam Reinhart becomes the match winner with two goals and one assist. The Columbus Blue Jackets lost 4-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks. Chicago celebrated their second away win in a row thanks to a brace from Alex DeBrincat. The San Jose Sharks beat the Detroit Red Wings 3-2 after overtime.
