Major Hollywood Studios Reach Employment Agreement with Directors’ Union to Prevent Work Stoppage

The major Hollywood studios have reached a provisional employment agreement with the union representing film and television directors. The deal is likely to prevent a work stoppage that would have pressured media companies to settle with striking writers.

According to the DGA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP), which represents Netflix and Walt Disney Co, among others, the agreement provides, among other things, for a wage increase of 5 percent in the first year and guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence. AI has become a major concern for writers and actors, who see their jobs as particularly vulnerable to the new technology.

The DGA has scheduled a vote for Tuesday to ratify the new contract. If approved, it could serve as a blueprint for the writers’ strike and upcoming talks between the studios and SAG-AFTRA, the union representing Hollywood actors.

A push for striking writers?

However, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike continues. The screenwriters have now been on strike for more than a month and have not scheduled any new talks with the Hollywood studios.

The last Hollywood writers’ union strike 15 years ago was marked by an agreement between the studios and the DGA. This time, however, that strategy won’t work, WGA negotiator Chris Keyser claimed Friday. “Any deal that puts this city back to work has to go right through the WGA. You can’t do that,” Keyser said in a video on YouTube.

The WGA strike has already disrupted several projects, such as the production of late-night shows and other programs such as Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and a spin-off of “Game of Thrones.”
