Major fire in Vlissingen apartment building, residents brought to safety | Inland

In an apartment building on Schaepmanstraat in Vlissingen, a major fire raged this morning. Some residents were checked by ambulance personnel, no injuries.

Residents of eight houses from the portico have to leave their homes, the municipality of Vlissingen will take care of them in ‘De Combinatie’ at Pablo Picasso.

The fire was discovered shortly before 5:30 am this morning. According to the Zeeland Safety Region (VRZ), the fire originated in a meter cupboard in the bottom storey of the complex. The stairwell soon filled with smoke, which also passed the houses above. The fire service therefore quickly scaled up to the ‘major fire’ level.

The fire brigade sent three fire-fighting vehicles out. A ladder truck and a cherry picker were also sent to the building, because residents had to be removed from homes via the outside. That worked: almost everyone would have remained unharmed, although ambulance employees treated one injured person.

The fire also caused a gas leak, which was plugged by the utility company, the VRZ reported. The fire brigade is now extinguishing the work; the street is blocked.
