Maintain Food Intake to Prevent Obesity During Pandemic

JAKARTA – Weight gain or obesity is one of the most discussed fitness issues during the COVID-19 pandemic which has been going on for one year since March 2020.

Some people gain weight during the pandemic, especially if they do less physical activity and order fast food more often.

“It is feared that it will increase (the incidence of obesity) due to a lifestyle that has limited mobility,” said a nutritionist from the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI) Prof. Dr. dr. Saptawati Bardosono, M.Sc told ANTARA, Friday.

dr. Saptawati then said a number of things that could be done to prevent weight gain during the pandemic, such as regulating the type of energy that goes into food and increasing physical activity even at home.

A balanced nutrition menu must be considered, in addition to controlling body weight, foods that contain lots of nutrients are also useful for maintaining a healthy body.

“Choosing staple food sources of carbohydrates with low glycemic index value, such as brown rice, then side dishes that are vegetable or animal low in fat by cooking them without frying, and multiplying vegetables and fruit,” said the nutritionist from the Indonesian Nutrition Association.

Meanwhile, people who have gained significant weight are trying hard to lose it. However, many shortcuts are taken such as going on a strict diet by cutting the intake of certain nutrients in the body. This of course will make the body lack nutrients so that it can cause other health problems.

dr. Saptawati said that the food that enters the body must contain complete nutrition if you do not want to experience malnutrition. In comparison, the amount of energy intake from carbohydrates is at least 50-60 percent, 15-20 percent protein and 30 percent fat.

“Meanwhile, vegetables and fruit are considered not contributing to energy intake so that they can be consumed a lot to make them feel full and their fiber content can be beneficial for health,” said dr. Saptawati.

In addition, dietary food is not the only way to have an ideal body weight, exercise must also be done regularly. “Diet coupled with exercise is very important for the success of a weight loss program because it can help to remove excess energy from the body,” said dr. Saptawati. (E-4)
