New York (CNN Business) – Macy’s is closing more than two dozen stores as financial problems increase for the historic retail store.
The company confirmed to CNN Business that it will close 28 Macy’s stores and one of Bloomingdale stores in the coming months. The closures affect locations in several states, including Florida, California, and Georgia, according to compiled lists of various media reports.
Macy’s reported Wednesday that sales in November and December declined only 0.6%, easing investors’ fears that it would be a terrible period of Christmas shopping. The stock rose 2% in the first operations before withdrawing.

In its most recent earnings report, Macy’s posted a 3.9% decrease in sales in open stores for at least one year.
Still, Macy’s CEO Jeff Gennette said the decline in sales was “more pronounced than we expected.” And blamed the weather, less tourists shopping in stores and problems in the lower level shopping centers. Macy’s shares have lost approximately 40% in the last year.
Department stores are being pressured by discount chains, such as TJ Maxx (TJX) and Target (TGT), which force them to put products on sale.
Last year was brutal for American retailers. They announced the closure of 9,302 stores, a 59% jump since 2018 and the highest number since Coresight Research began tracking data in 2012.
This year also had a difficult start. Pier 1 Imports said Monday that it will close almost half of its stores “to better align its business with the current operating environment.”
