Macron wants to crack down on child sexual abuse

ParisFrench President Emmanuel Macron has announced tougher action against the sexual abuse of minors. The victims of sexual violence would “never be left alone again,” said Macron in a video published on Twitter on Saturday. In the past few weeks, thousands of French people had reported sexual assault in families on the Internet using the hashtag #Metooinceste.

This was triggered by a book by the lawyer Camille Kouchner about alleged abuse in her well-known family. She accused her stepfather, the renowned political scientist Olivier Duhamel, of abusing her twin brother.

“Nobody can ignore these testimonies anymore,” said Macron of the testimonials of thousands of French people. They would also have to be collected “years, decades later” and “criminals” would have to be punished for their actions. “We need to adapt our law to better protect children who are victims of incest and sexual violence,” said the president.

The statute of limitations for sex crimes against minors in France was extended to 30 years in 2018, but there are demands to completely abolish the statute of limitations.
