Macron and Johnson against the Superlega: “Wrong project” – Corriere.it

The president of France Emmanuel Macron and the British premier Boris Johnson have spoken out against the possibility that some of the most important European football clubs form a new Super League (here the explanation of the project).

The official statement from the Elysée, sent to the Reuters agency, states that the president “supports the position of the French clubs, which refused to participate in the project” which “undermines the principle of solidarity and meritocracy in sport”.

France, continues the Elysée communiqué, “will support all the steps” taken by the French League, Uefa and Fifa “to protect the integrity of federal, national and European competitions».

On the same wave line Boris Johnson, who wrote on Twitter that «the plans for a European Super League would harm football: we support the football authorities in their decisions. These plans would strike the national leagues to the heart and worry fans across the country. The clubs involved must respond to their fans, and to the entire football community, before taking further steps ».

According to rumors, the Superlega was also invited to the Paris Saint Germain, who would have declined the offer. They would also say no Bayern Monaco e Borussia Dortmund. Besides Real Madrid, Juventus e Manchester United, the companies indicated as the creators of the project, would have shown interest Barcellona, Atletico Madrid, Milan, Inter, Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea e Tottenham.

A few hours ago, Uefa – together with the Italian, Spanish and English leagues – issued a very harsh communiqué with which he announced that any club intending to join the Super League would find itself excluded from competitions at national and European level, and would force his players to be excluded from their national teams. “As previously announced by FIFA and the 6 Federations”, the statement reads, “the clubs involved will be excluded from any other competition, both national, European or world, and their players will be denied the opportunity to represent the national team” . A detail of enormous importance for Johnson – and for Macron, who was at the stadium, in 2018, to see the Blues triumph in the last World Cup.
