This Thursday, Borussia Dortmund’s U23s were on the pitch for the first time this summer. Pascal Bieler, Thomas Feldhoff and Benjamin Schüßler led the very first unit – after the sudden departure of Enrico Maaßen and his intimate knowledge and trusted assistant coach Sebastian Block to FC Augsburg, this is the remaining coaching team. The top football coach was still missing, but he has finally been found: Christian Preusser is to become Maassen’s successor.

The signs were already growing on Wednesday evening – a report from “Sky” corresponds to kicker information. Accordingly, the 38-year-old coach, who was a hotly traded candidate for the Maaßen legacy from the start alongside Guerino Capretti (most recently Dynamo Dresden) and Patrick Glöckner (Waldhof Mannheim), will be presented promptly. He is already expected on the training ground on Friday.

Preusser worked for second division side Fortuna Düsseldorf last season. The native Berliner swung the scepter in the NRW state capital for 21 games, but was exchanged for Daniel Thioune after only eight months and 20 points collected. He managed to stabilize the lurching Fortuna – and to secure relegation.

Preusser brings the Schlotterbeck brothers to the pros

What makes Preusser interesting for Borussia is his work before the unsuccessful engagement in Düsseldorf: He looked after SC Freiburg II for five years, during which time he rose from the Oberliga to the 3rd division, more after moving into professional football ended such a successful activity in Breisgau.

More than 20 players made the leap into professional football during his time at SC – including the Schlotterbeck brothers Keven and Nico, who is known to have switched to BVB, and Mohamed Dräger (formerly Olympiacos Piraeus, now FC Luzern).

Evidence of performance that Borussia agreed to. In addition, Preußer is used to working for a professional team – and has already gained experience in the third division and second division in the service of Rot-Weiss Erfurt and Fortuna Düsseldorf. All of this spoke for this football teacher, who is tactically flexible – and should now build on his successful work in Freiburg at BVB II.

Maassen’s footsteps are significant – Pherai leaves BVB

For him, it’s about getting to know his new workforce as quickly as possible, getting an idea of strengths and weaknesses, promoting talent – and, at best, decent football in the 3rd division to ensure relegation. The footprints left by the recently emigrated Maassen are considerable.

Preusser will have to moderate a major upheaval: Not only is the successful coach gone, but also numerous regular employees. Berkan Taz joined Waldhof Mannheim, Richmond Tachie went to SC Paderborn, Lennard Maloney to 1. FC Heidenheim. What will happen to Antonios Papadopoulos is still unclear.

Immanuel Pherai, one of the U23s’ highlight players last season, will leave the club. There are currently nine external additions – Preusser is asked to build a new team.
